Today’s post is all about creating a cute box to gift your handmade cards in. I had seen several of these on YouTube but they were all created using 12 x 12” paper and I wanted to feature Stampin’ Up!’s wonderful 8 ½ x 11” cardstock as I love the colors. So that is what I set out to do and here is what I came up with…
I started with the base of the box. I cut my cardstock to 6 x 11” and then scored
it at ½”, 5”, and 6 ½” (see photo below).
One thing I did not do before taking the photo was to miter cut the top
two ½” scored corners, this allows the top of the box to fit on nice and neat.
Next, I cut my sides. I cut 2 pieces of cardstock to 2 ½ x 5” and
scored them on three sides at ½”. I cut
away the bottom of the sides at the corners (see photo below). I did forget one step prior to taking this
photo and that was that I mitered the top two corners slightly as well so the
box fits together nicely.
For the top of the box, I cut my cardstock
to 3 ½ x 6” and scored it at 1 ½”. I
rounded the corners on the larger of the flaps as this will be the front of my
box.
After burnishing all my score lines with
my bone folder, I began to put the box together. I started with the bottoms of the two sides
and adhered them to the bottom of my box as shown below.
After getting the bottom of the sides adhered,
I began to adhere the sides to the inside of the main box structure as shown in
the photos below.
With the main box structure and sides all adhered I adhered the top of the box as shown below.
Next, I added two magnets to the box lid (before adding the cardstock and DSP so you wouldn't see them) This allows it stay closed nice and neatly (you could also add a ribbon around the
box to tie it shut whichever you would prefer).
Now on to decorating the box, I used a Designer Series Paper called True Blue Florals that is no
longer available but you should use whatever DSP you have that coordinates with the cards you are creating to go inside the box. It was one of the
product of the month offers a few months back where you can purchase the item
for $5 with a $75 qualifying purchase, be on the watchout for them as they are a great deal. Here are all the measurements for the cardstock layers and the DSP layers.
Front and back,
mats are 4 ¼ x 5 ¾” and DSP is 4 x 5 ½”.
Sides, mats are 1 ¼ x 4 ¼” and DSP is 1 x 4”.
Top outside and
inside mats are 1 ¼ x 5 ¾” and the DSP (for the outside, I didn’t use it on the
inside) is 1 x 5 ½”.
Front Flap and
inside mats are 1 ¾ x 5 ¾” and the DSP (for the outside, I didn’t put DSP on
the inside) is 1 ½ x 5 ½” and be sure to round those corners for the flap.
Well, that is it, I hope you enjoy this project I certainly enjoyed making it. I will be following up with cards that coordinate with the box over the next week or so. Be sure to watch for those as well.
