Lily Pad Dreams

Here is another technique we worked with during our last quarterly meeting.  I love it.  I did change up a few things but the technique of using different coloring tools with water color paper really intrigued me and I am so happy I decided to give it a really try.

I decided today I created the same card and just used two different coloring methods.  I love each of them for different reasons.  The Stampin’ Blends make some very vivid lily pads where the water color pencils make some very soft ones.  Each is beautiful in its own right.  Which do you prefer?

With Stampin' Blend Markers

With Watercolor Pencils and Aqua Painter

So now let’s talk about how the card is made.

The card base is Coastal Cabana cardstock cut to 5 ½ x 8 ½” and scored at 4 ¼”.  I then added a layer of Whisper White cardstock that measures 4 x 5 ¼” and a layer of the Lily Impressions Designer Series Paper (got to love that free paper from Sale-A-Bration) that measures 3 ¾ x 5”.  I did punch out my sentiment from that Whisper White layer before I adhered the DSP (after all no one is going to see that area and it is a good use of materials) using the Label Me Fancy punch.  I stamped the sentiment from the Honey Bee stamp set using Pretty Peacock ink and I attached it with dimensionals.

I set my Stamparatus up (huge time saver especially when you have several cards to make)  with both the large lily flower and the bud and both the large and small lily pad and one of the leaves from the Lovely Lily Pad stamp set (yep, another Sale-A-Bration freebie) and stamped using Versamark ink onto a piece of Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper and the heat embossed it with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder and my Heat Tool.  (COLORING TIP - COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, yes I know that feels fundamentally wrong but I promise you will be happy with the result.  This allows you to cut around the flower and keep the color going while still seeing all the beautiful white embossing).

Now here is where my two cards took different turns.  For the first card I colored the flowers, lily pads and leaf with Stampin’ Blends (colors listed below) for that vibrant strong color.  For the second card I colored the flowers, lily pads and leaf with the Watercolor Pencils Assortment 2 and my Aqua Painter for that soft watercolor affect.  I fussy cut them out (there are coordinating dies that you can also get as a freebie but several of my customers got the stamps and paper but not the dies and I wanted to show them how easy these are to fussy cut) and added them to my cards using dimensionals.

I hope you enjoy these cards and would love to hear which you prefer.

I will list the supplies I for both cards below (the only difference is the markers verses the watercolor pencils) used below and you can find the supplies for this card and many more on my website at www.craftwithronnie.stampinup.net or by clicking the shopping button at the top of this blog.

Happy Birthday Pop Up Card

Last month I attended the North Carolina Demonstrators Team Meeting which was presented by the TaDa’s and it was great.  We made a variation of this card and I loved it and wanted to share it in my workshops this month.  I did change a few things but this basic design for a pop-up card has been around for years.  So here it is…

And here is how it is made.  The card base is made of several pieces so let’s start by cutting and scoring those pieces.  I used Flirty Flamingo cardstock for my base.  Cut one piece to 8 ½ x 4 ¼” and on the 8 ½” side score at ½, 1 ½, 3 and 4”.   Next cut a piece 3 x 4 ¼” and score it on the 4 ¼” side at ½ and 1 ½”.  I started by putting the larger piece together.  So basically, you fold the scored pieces up to create a box (see the pic below for the idea).  I found that since the card needs to fold flat for mailing that the best way to adhere it is with it folded down flat.  So, here is a little more explanation on this.  When the score lines are all folded, take the back piece that is 4 ½” and the next score which is 5 ½” and lay them flat, then take the little 1/2” flap and put your adhesive on it and adhere it to the back of the card.

Now before going any further with the card base cut a piece of Pretty Peacock cardstock to 2 ¾ x 4” and layered a piece of the Lily Impressions Designer Series Paper (one of the great free offers during Sale-A-Bration) that measured 2 ½ x 3 ¾” on top of this.  Adhere this layer to the back top of the card above the little box you created.

Now for the next step take that 3 x 4 ¼” piece and crease it on the score lines.  With the card still laying flat attach the long piece at the bottom of the card.  It should be centered on the card and just about 1/8” up from the bottom.  Now attach the top, this will hit kind of in the middle of the Designer Series Paper.

Now that you have the basic structure of the card done comes the fun.  Take a piece of Whisper White Cardstock that is 1 x 3 ¾” and stamp the sentiment from the Happy Birthday To You stamp set (another great freebie during Sale-A-Bration).  I used Pretty Peacock ink for that.  Mount the sentiment onto a piece of Pretty Peacock cardstock that measures 1 ¼ x 4”.  Set that aside to add after we finish up our cake.

Using a piece of Blushing Bride cardstock (I find using colored cardstock takes my Stampin’ Blends markers to a new level) stamp the cake from the stamp set twice using Versamark ink and emboss it using Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heat set using your Heat Tool.  (see photo below) I used the Birthday Dies from the Coordination Release to cut out a whole cake and to cut out just the flowers on the cake.  I colored the cake and flowers using Stampin’ Blends (I will list the colors I used below.  Then using the same die set I cut the cake stand out of Gold Foil Sheet and attached it to the cake.  I attached the second set of flowers using dimensionals which looks great.  I did add Wink Of Sella to my flowers.  I attached this (again with dimensionals) to the card and layered the sentiment over the base of the cake stand.

I did add a piece of Whisper White cardstock to the back of the card that measures 4 x 4 1/4" to add my greeting to.

I hope you enjoy this card.  I will list the supplies I used below and you can find the supplies for this card and many more on my website at www.craftwithronnie.stampinup.net or by clicking the shopping button at the top of this blog.

Just Buzzing Around

I decided today I would create a card that uses both Sale-A-Bration Items and items from the new Mini Catalog and I am pretty happy with this adorable spinner card.  I found several of these cards where two pennies were used to make these cute spinner cards and thought I would give it a try.

The card base is Daffodil Delight cardstock cut to 4 ¼ x 11” and scored at 5 ½”.

For the spinning layer I layered a piece of the Golden Honey Specialty DSP that is a free item with a $50 qualifying purchase during Sale-A-Bration that measures 3 ¾ x 5” onto a piece of Basic Black cardstock that measures 4 x 5 ¼” (Tip: don’t get the adhesive in the center of the layer so you can use the circles that are cut out individually, you will actually be using the black one in a later step on this card and the DSP one can be saved for another project).

I then centered the largest and the fourth largest of the Layering Circles Dies onto the center of this layer and ran it through my die cutting machine (note:  I did run it through a couple of times to ensure both layers cut through).  I added this layer to my card base using lots of dimensionals (but be sure not to get them too close to the circle opening as you don’t want them to interfere with your little buzzing bee.  I them took the smaller of the two circles that were cut out of the black when we made this layer and added a little piece of Gold Foil paper that I die cut using the honeycomb die from the set and then I returned it to the center of the circle (you can use the other piece that was cut out to make sure it is perfectly centered) and popped it up with dimensionals.

To make your spinning bee you stamp the bee from the stamp set onto a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock and die cut it with the coordinating dies (I did add a little color with the Dark Mango Melody Delight Stampin’ Blend), you then take two dimensionals and stick them together.  I then cut off each of the little corners making the dimensional perfectly round and used it to adhere two pennies together.  I worked the penny mechanism into the circles and added my bee with a mini glue dot.  So, when the card is moved the bee spins around it.

For the inside of the card I kept it simple and added one of the little flowers also from the same stamp set that I stamped onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock that is 4 x 5 ¼” using Tuxedo Black Memento ink and again I added just a touch of color using that Stampin’ Blend marker.  I figured I could leave it blank and add any sentiment I needed at a later date.

I hope you enjoy this card.  I will list the supplies I used below and you can find the supplies for this card and many more on my website at www.craftwithronnie.stampinup.net or by clicking the shopping button at the top of this blog.
